NORTH BAY – On May 31, 2017, Nipissing University announced that it will bestow an honorary doctorate to Roy Slack, president of Cementation Canada. Mr. Slack is a professional engineer and a graduate of the Mining Engineering program at Queen’s University in Kingston. In 1998, Mr. Slack launched Cementation’s operations in North America, serving as President, a role he still holds today. In 2008, Mr. Slack was awarded the Engineer’s Medal for Entrepreneurship by the Professional Engineers of Ontario and presented with the Metal Mining Society Award by the Canadian Institute of Mining in 2009. In 2012, Rotary International named him a Paul Harris Fellow. Mr. Slack has been active in numerous safety initiatives and in 2013, he was appointed to the Province of Ontario’s first Prevention Council to advise the government on workplace safety. In 2017, Mr. Slack was appointed Incoming President Elect of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, the leading technical society of professionals in the Canadian minerals and energy industries.

“We are honoured and thankful that these extraordinary people will help us to celebrate our graduating students,” said Dr. Mike DeGagné, president and vice-chancellor of Nipissing University, in referring to this year’s honorary degree recipients. “Their acceptance of our highest honour, an honorary degree, demonstrates understanding and support of Nipissing’s mission and the embracing of a connection with our institution.”

Roy Slack said “This is very exciting and I am thrilled to be honoured by Nipissing University. In many ways this honour is recognition of the Cementation group and all our employees, who work very hard to support the communities we live and work in. “

Mr. Slack will receive his honorary degree during the North Bay convocation ceremonies being held at the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, on June 9, 2017.
