October 31, 2014

NORTH BAY – Cementation’s contribution towards developing a strong safety culture within the company and within the underground mining industry has earned recognition from Canadian Occupational Safety publication. Cementation Canada is honoured to receive the 2014 Canada’s Safest Employers gold award in the Mining and Natural Resources category.

Recipients from ten industry specific categories received awards at the 2014 Canada’s Safest Employers Gala held October 28, 2014, at the Arcadian Court, Toronto. A panel of 13 judges was involved in the selection process which included an evaluation of a detailed company submission and a review of separately submitted surveys by employees from each company. Launched in 2011, the awards are presented by Canadian Occupational Safety magazine, a Thompson Reuters business.

Working safely is a value Cementation wants every employee to embrace at work and home. Excellence in safety is a corner stone of the company’s mission statement and the first to be listed under corporate values. The company’s proactive approach includes reporting every incident for review and recommendation, and if the findings result in a new procedure, this information is shared within the company and industry. In mining, companies are competitive, but when it comes to safety they are collaborative. Roy Slack, President of Cementation said “We are very honoured to receive this award which recognizes a foundational aspect of our organization, that being that we truly care about our employees. This award has been earned by our employees, who come to work every day committed to keeping themselves and their co-workers safe.”

In a quote from Amanda Silliker, editor of Canadian Occupational Safety, “Occupational health and safety professionals from all across Canada work tirelessly to promote the safety and well-being of their workforce. Canada’s Safest Employers awards give the opportunity to recognize these hard-working individuals and celebrate the culture of safety they have helped foster in their organizations. From innovative safety programs, employee engagement and training to wellness programs and strong management support, these winning employers are setting an excellent example for others to follow.”
