NORTH BAY, ON – April 5, 2024 – Cementation Americas Director Roy Slack will be awarded the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (CIM) Mining Safety Leadership Award at this year’s CIM-Caterpillar Awards Gala on May 13, 2024.

The highly anticipated annual gala gathers industry leaders and performers to celebrate and honour the sector’s ambitious achievements and contributions. Slack will receive recognition for his exceptional contributions toward improving mining health and safety results within the mining industry in Canada.

“This recognition is very special to me as health and safety has been a career-long passion of mine,” said Slack. “I have seen tremendous progress over the years within the mining industry when it comes to protecting our people, and that is just one reason it is an industry that I am proud to be a part of.”

Slack’s passion for health and safety has positively influenced the mining industry. He is a senior advisor of the CIM Health & Safety Society, a lifetime member of the Ontario Mine Contractors Safety Association, has served as an advisor on the province of Ontario’s Prevention Council, and received recognition for his lifetime contribution to mine health and safety by Workplace Safety North.

The 2024 Mining Safety Leadership Award recipient served as president and chair of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy & Petroleum from 2019-2020 and actively contributed to the CIM Journal for Health and Safety as an associate editor. In addition to his board role at Cementation, Slack also serves on the board of Torex Gold Resources, where he is also a member of their environmental social governance committee and an advisory board member for Tesc Construction.

At the gala dinner, the CIM will also issue awards to honour the exemplary work of other individuals and organizations in the following categories: Branch and Society, Early Career, Exploration, Sustainability, Safety, Career Excellence, Social Responsibility and Education, and Legacy.
